Statement of Intent for Design & Technology

Intent

At Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy our design and technology curriculum follow a clear progression map and this feeds into a spiral curriculum, where previous learning is built upon each year in order to prepare children for the developing world.  The subject encourages children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.  Through the study of design and technology children combine practical skills with an understanding of social and environmental issues, in order to design and make a product.  Evaluation is an integral part of the design process and allows children to adapt and improve their product, this is a key skill which they need throughout their life. Design and Technology helps all children to become discriminating and informed consumers and potential innovators.

We feel that the teaching of food and nutrition is of great importance and holds great relevance in current times. By instilling a love of cooking in pupils will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

Implementation

Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to nurture all children within a happy and stimulating environment. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. All teaching of DT should follow the design, make and evaluate cycle. Each stage should be rooted in technical knowledge. The design process should be rooted in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning. To ensure this we use Projects on a Page as a base for out Design and Technology curriculum.

Impact

The impact of our design and technology curriculum can be seen not only in our children’s D & T folders but also through classroom displays and the school environment. Our children are always keen to learn new skills and work hard to improve those shown to them. The children’s art is very cross-curricular, and helps them to express themselves, as well as show their knowledge of history, geography and science.

Aims:

  • An excellent attitude to learning and independent working.

  • The ability to use time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others.

  • The ability to carry out thorough research, show initiative and ask questions to develop an exceptionally detailed knowledge of users’ needs.

  • A thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.

  • The ability to apply mathematical knowledge and skills accurately.

  • The ability to manage risks exceptionally well to manufacture products safely and hygienically.
