At Canon Popham C of E Primary Academy, we aim to teach children fluent word reading skills and provide a good foundation in spelling.
Phonics teaching involves showing children the sounds of letters (not the letter names) and how these sounds can be blended together to make words. For example, the word ‘cat’ is a decodable word because the letter sounds can be blended together.
Read Write Inc (RWI)
RWI is a programme to get children off to a flying start with their English. RWI is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.
When using RWI to read the children will:

learn that sounds are represented by written letters
-
learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
-
learn how to blend sounds
-
learn to read words using Fred Talk
-
read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out
-
show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions
When using RWI to write the children will:
-
learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds
-
learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
-
write simple sentences
Handwriting
Each phoneme we have taught in Read, Write, Inc has a phrase which we use in order to help the children write the grapheme with the correct letter formation.
Please refer to this cursive alphabet sheet for the phrases to support your child with the development of their handwriting.

Phonics Screening Check – Year 1 and Year 2
The phonics screening check is a quick and easy check of your child’s phonics knowledge. It helps the school confirm whether your child has made the expected progress. The national phonics screening check was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils in the country. Children who do not pass the phonics screening check in Year 1, retake the phonics screening check the following year when they are in Year 2. Phonics – Reading
Support your child with reading words from all the phonemes taught in a set. This can be used as a revision or to target specific sounds your child needs more practice with. It contains real words and nonsense – made up – words to encourage your child to segment (say the sounds) and blend (put the sounds together to read the word):
Support your child with reading fiction (stories) and non fiction (information) books. Oxford Owl Library have a Read Write Inc. page where you can find lots of free resources to support your child’s learning including;
